“We believe God has taken us through this journey for 40 years. We feel so blessed, and we hope our music inspires not just artists but everyone who listens.”
– Kapena
In case you didn’t know, 2024 marks a monumental milestone in the music world— 40 years of Kapena! This iconic band, whose rhythms and harmonies have become the soundtrack to so many lives, continues to inspire and unite fans across generations. From their beginnings in Hawaiʻi to their global influence today, Kapena’s music remains as iconic and resonant as ever.

I grew up with Kapena’s music as a staple in my home, a reflection of the joy and nostalgia it brings to so many. Songs like Don’t Say Goodbye are etched into my childhood memories— I still recall singing the lyrics at the top of my lungs, not quite understanding the depth of the words but feeling their undeniable magic. Kapena’s music has always been about more than melodies; it’s about connection. Whether you’re in a grocery store in Hawai‘i, shuffling your playlist, or at a festival, Kapena’s tunes are there, weaving moments together with the spirit of aloha.
When we had the chance to meet the OG Kapena at Holo Holo Tacoma, it felt like stepping into a piece of living history. Backstage in their green room, the atmosphere was buzzing— not just with excitement but with laughter and warmth. Their humor and humility made the interview an unforgettable experience.
Reflecting on 40 Years
We began by asking the band what has been the most rewarding part of their 40-year journey. Their response was heartfelt: seeing people of all ages, especially children, singing their songs, even after all these years. Tiva shared how deeply moving it is to witness the energy and support of their fans, emphasizing the gratitude they feel for the people who have stood by them through the decades.
“It’s heartwarming to see how much love and energy people bring to our shows,”
he said.
Kapena’s legacy also lies in their influence on Pasifika artists. They shared how younger artists often approach them with gratitude, expressing how their music has inspired them to pursue their own dreams.
“We always tell them to persevere,” they said. “You can make it your lifetime dream, but it’s up to you to make it happen.”
Tiva added another layer to their impact, highlighting how Kapena has brought together people from across the Pacific— Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia— through their music.
“It’s incredible to see how far we’ve come and how many lives we’ve touched,”
he said with a smile, his joy palpable as he reflected on the band’s ongoing journey.
A song for the Ages

When asked what song best represents their journey, the band unanimously chose Don’t Say Goodbye. They recounted a powerful moment at FESTPAC, held in Hawai‘i, where attendees from across the Pacific— Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tahiti, Guam, and more—sang the song together. “It was magical,” they said. “Looking into the crowd and seeing people from so many islands resonating with that song— it was a reminder of why we do what we do.”
Interestingly, the song was written and recorded during their high school years, a testament to how timeless their music truly is. Tiva, ever the comedian, jokingly suggested Talofa Teine before Kelly Boy chimed in with the definitive answer, sparking laughter all around.
Lessons from a Life time of Music
Forty years in the industry have taught Kapena invaluable lessons. When asked to share advice for artists today, their response was profound: “Stick with what got you to where you are.” They spoke about staying true to their roots while evolving, noting that each of their albums ends with gospel songs as a reflection of their faith. “We believe God has taken us through this journey for 40 years,” they said. “We feel so blessed, and we hope our music inspires not just artists but everyone who listens.”
Looking Ahead
What’s next for Kapena? “We’re taking it day by day,” they said. While many have asked them to perform in new locations, the band focuses on embracing each opportunity as it comes. “Tomorrow isn’t promised, so we count every day as a blessing,” they shared. Timo, with his trademark humor, added that he’d have a better answer after his upcoming Alaskan cruise— a comment that had everyone laughing.

A Legacy That Lives On
This interview was more than a conversation— it was a celebration of a band that has given so much to the world through their music. Kapena’s journey is one of resilience, passion, and an eduring connection to their roots and their fans. As they continue to inspire and unite generations, we’re reminded of the power of music to bring people together.
A special thanks to Sua for making this unforgettable experience possible. To Kapena: thank you for 40 legendary years of music. Here’s to many more!
