Jai Opetaia, the Samoan-Australian professional boxer, is proving that success is not just about personal achievements but also about giving back to the place that made you. Amidst his rising stardom, he continuously returns to Samoa, his motherland, embodying the powerful and famous Samoan proverb: E lele le toloa ae ma’au i le vai – The toloa bird flies far, but will always return to the water. This proverb is more than just words; it is a reflection of cultural identity, belonging, and responsibility. No matter where life takes us, we carry our roots, our heritage, and our people with us. For Jai, this truth resonates deeply. He could choose to spend his time, money, and resources anywhere in the world, yet he chooses to return to Samoa, to uplift, to empower, and to inspire.
Jai Opetaia has made it a priority to invest in the next generation of Samoan athletes. Just last month, he was in Samoa, engaging in media visits, school visits, and boxing clinics.

Now, as he revealed on social media, he is preparing to return once again, proving that his commitment extends far beyond a single gesture. Jai posed a crucial question: “How can we help the kids? How can we help them get more gear?” Concerned about the lack of boxing equipment in Samoa, he reached out to Nick Nunan at FightHQ. Without hesitation, the team at FightHQ stepped up to help.
In the same video Jai posted on his socials, he shares his thoughts:
“We get to change kids’ lives, and this is what it’s all about. These are the important things in life, I reckon. You get to a certain stage where it just becomes time to help other people, so we’re there now.”
“We’re there now,” he humbly shared, a simple yet powerful statement. It speaks volumes about his dedication to using his platform for a purpose greater than himself. In a world where professional athletes can easily get lost in fame and fortune, Jai Opetaia is a beacon of hope and inspiration.

It is no wonder he is called “The People’s Champ.” He represents more than just his skill in the ring, he represents the heart of the Pacific, the pride of Samoa, and the unbreakable bond between an athlete and his homeland. Jai Opetaia’s actions serve as a powerful reminder to all Pasifika people, athletes and beyond, that no matter how far they go in life, they should always stay connected to their roots and honor where they come from. His legacy is already being written, not just in boxing history but in the hearts of the next generation. He is proof that you can take the man out of Samoa, but you can never take Samoa out of the man.
