In the heart of American Samoa, a powerful journey continues to unfold, one that honors heritage, identity, and pride through the art of dance. Maluali’i Siva Academy is more than just a place to learn movement; it is a sanctuary where culture lives and breathes, passed down from elders to the next generation.
Founded and based in American Samoa in 2023 by Eti Eti, a passionate dancer, teacher, and cultural steward, the academy began humbly, gathering young boys wherever space allowed, igniting a spark that has now grown into a powerful flame. Here, Samoan boys and young men don’t just learn siva; they discover discipline, respect, leadership, and a deep connection to their roots.

“This is more than just dance,” Eti says, his voice steady with purpose. “It’s about sparking something inside, a sense of pride, of identity.” At Maluali’i, every step carries meaning, every chant echoes with history, and every lesson strengthens the bond to language and tradition. “We’re not just teaching dance moves. We’re teaching values through movement, through language, through connection.” With a dedicated team of all-male instructors, many former students themselves, the academy is a brotherhood where values are lived and passed on.

In a time when the Samoan language faces decline among younger generations, Maluali’i stands strong, intentionally weaving language and culture into every practice, keeping both alive in heart and spirit.
Social media has amplified their story beyond the islands, drawing support from across the globe, but at its core, Maluali’i remains a close-knit family. Eti recalls their first class filled with over 80 eager students and proud parents, a moment that confirmed the academy’s vital role in the community.
Their teaching balances tradition with joy, blending structured drills and playful games, inviting students to lead prayers, guide stretches, and learn by doing. The goal is clear: to nurture confident, grounded, and proud Samoan men who carry their culture forward. “My biggest goal is to make a real difference in their lives. To leave something they can carry – not just as dancers, but as proud Samoan men.”
Eti’s impact reaches beyond the classroom through choreography, mentorship, and inspiring projects like a youth group’s rendition of “Amene,” which has amassed over 2 million+ views on YouTube. Yet, his mission remains simple and mighty: “To make a real difference, leaving a legacy that lasts beyond dance.”

When asked to describe Maluali’i in three words, he answers without pause: fun, passion, and culture. His advice to young dancers is simple yet powerful: “Follow your passion, work hard, and never be afraid to try.”
Maluali’i just recently celebrated its first anniversary with a sold-out one-year showcase in American Samoa. The event, themed Fa’aeva le Lautifa i le Moanauli, was a beautiful celebration of identity, talent, and community. This milestone honors the academy’s journey and the promising future ahead. From the islands and beyond, Eti’s vision reminds us that culture is not just preserved; it is lived and celebrated loudly and proudly. Best of luck to Maluali’i Siva Academy on their mission to inspire the next generation of Samoan men. May their steps continue to carry the strength, spirit, and pride of their people for many years to come.
