The band from Hawai’i has countless nostalgic songs played at every family function, barbeque, or a drive to the beach with your friends. We got the privilege to speak with Roman, lead singer of Kolohe Kai, and ask some questions we’ve been wanting to know as avid Island Reggae listeners.

It was our Dream Girl moment to be able to have a quick chat with Roman from Kolohe Kai before he went on stage at Holo Holo Festival. So readers, let’s Cool Down, and enjoy this easy write up from your favorite, iconic, local band from the shores of Hawai’i.

WHO OR WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE MUSIC?

My dad was always playing guitar with my uncles “backyard style.” as a young kid, that is what i admired the most – watching my dad and his family jam. as i started writing my own music, i fell in love with ekolu. i wanted to make positive island reggae music like him. i didn’t have expectation, but appreciation to jam.

HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?

so many people can be reached by a song of mine. if i’m able to write something positive, that is my favorite part of my career. a song of mine can maybe help someone avoid giving up life. it is the biggest privilege to get to help people.

STORY BEHIND THE NAME “KOLOHE KAI?”

Kolohe means “rascal,” “naughty,” or “mischievous.” When I was young, I was always pulling pranks on my family. As a kid, I was called Kolohe. In high school, I wanted to name the band “Kolohe Boys,” but the girl in our band wasn’t a boy and said, “I’m not going to be a part of a band named ‘Kolohe Boys’ when I’m the only girl.”

Our ukulele player at the time said, “You write songs all about the ocean, and ‘Kai’ means ocean, so Kolohe Kai became the name.” It was something to represent more than just “the boys” and to embody being a rascal in the water. “Cool Down,” the biggest song on that album, made the biggest splash—literally.
